Christen L. Hayes, 30-year-old female teacher from Town of Chenango, New York, has been arrested and is accused of engaging in sex with a teen male student on several occasions between June 2009 and February 2010.
Hayes, of Castle Creek Road, had been employed as a teacher's assistant with Onondaga - Cortland - Madison Counties BOCES, is charged with three counts of third-degree rape, three counts of third-degree criminal sexual act, all felonies, three counts of third-degree sexual abuse, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of unlawfully dealing with a child, all misdemeanors.
Hayes resigned from OCM BOCES in August 2010, citing health reasons, according to Superintendent Jessica Cohen. The superintendent also noted that the student was not in Hayes' class. She met the student while working in Marcellus at a school for children with emotional and behavioral issues. Although he was not Hayes’ student, he attended the school she worked in. Hayes and the student communicated online through the social networking site, MySpace. None of the sexual encounters actually happened on school property.
The Sheriff’s Office says Hayes engaged in sexual activity with the student on several occasions from June 2009 to February 2010.
